South by Southwest Twenty Fourteen

Austin, Texas is annually flooded with: teachers, students, award-winning speakers, industry leaders, musicians, artists, fans, politicians, engineers, outcasts, athletes, ravers, revolutionary icons, and a few hundred thousand people from down the road. In all of the action, some may find themselves feeling overwhelmed about the event. This article is structured to help break down the big cornerstones that make up South by Southwest.

SXSW originally featured underground international, regional and local music acts to provide a platform for their art. During the years from 1987 to 1993 the festival focused on music. In 1994 the festival organizers added film and an interactive section to the event. SXSWedu started in 2011 and has been growing steadily since its birth.

SXSWedu (Mar. 3-6)

Educational leaders worldwide gather before the action gets going in downtown Austin from March 3-6. A majority of the events for SXSWedu are setup for badge members, but there is Education Expo open to the public on Tuesday, March 4 at the Austin Convention Center from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. The expo will help potential college candidates find niches in developing industries.

SXSW Interactive (Mar. 7-11)

The Interactive section of the month provides: SXSW Accelerator, the SXSW Gaming Expo, the SXSW Trade Show, SXSW Create, the Digital Creative Job Market, cross-industry conversations with attendees from SXSW Film and SXSW Music and the SXSW Interactive Awards, (an award ceremony highlighting innovative technology.) The Gaming Expo will be held from March 7-9 at the Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road, Austin, Texas 78704. There will be events and expeditions open to the public.

State-of-the-art tiered classrooms is available at the SXSW Interactive Festival workshops. These in-depth, hands-on educational programs and seminars provide additional technical skills depending on the badge level each attendee holds for the week.

SXSW Music (Mar. 11-16)

To gear up for all the new music available at the festival this year, we have setup links and media featuring selected international acts performing this year. Over 180 artists have been listed in the first wave. Music tradition pushes forward with the 27th Annual SXSW event this upcoming March in Austin, TX. The first round of bands have been released, and the second wave is being released this week.
