Netflix has beefed up their fall lineup with top tier talent across the board. Their comedy section of content is especially strong with new episodes featuring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross’s latest show.

Aziz Ansari takes an inter-perspective look at his life. He dives into the psychology within himself to find new paths of comedy.

After watching a few episodes of both shows, I caught myself laughing out loud more than expected. The plot structure with both of these projects seemed more male orientated. Which is good for building male audiences, but I could see them possibly alienating female audiences.

W/ Bob & David takes a look back at Mr. Show, at the same time updating their approach to generating humor. During my first time watching the show with another editor, we both had unique perspectives on the show. He had watched Mr. Show, and was looking forward to this new show. I was aware of the material by Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, but hadn’t really developed an appreciation for their work.

The behind the scenes tour gave a deeper understanding to the layers of comedy that play into each scene. The Salesman sketch really hit home, after working in sales for over five years. Each sketch finds a way to connect an audience to topic in comedy.

Master of None featuring Aziz showcases a small step in maturity for the comedian. His standup comedy is usually stronger material, but I can see how the depth of writing in time can be difficult for a standup comic, in comparison to veteran writers that have produced televised shows in the past.

Aziz captures a younger demographic, and jabs at the millennium generation.

Before watching these shows, I was a bigger Aziz fan, and wanted to see his material more. After watching the shows, I felt he is taking on more of the writing responsibilities than necessary, in comparison to Bob and Dave working with a team.

The energy and creative development in the writing room for Bob and Dave is healthy and stimulating in a creative sense. If Netflix is planning on continuing with the Aziz show, I would suggest giving him a strong female comedian to play off of when developing content.
