[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]

Saturday morning came early after a long “Huloween” Friday.  We started the day pretty much the same way as Day 1, with more bacon and mimosas.  We all laughed and went on and on about how good the shows had been.  We did our best to re-hash all the covers we had heard and piece together sets and what we had seen and done.  Staring at the schedule we knew Saturday was about to really start and once it did, there was no stopping.  Halloween was over, but Hulaween was in full force.  As a whole campsite, we all put on our gnome hats, some had beards, some had knickers, but we all had that good ol’ gnome spirit.  You may have seen many gardens of gnomes dancing around Saturday at Hulaween.  The day was full of witty gnome puns.

Oh, “you gnome you like it.”

Strung Like A Horse

The Tennessee gypsy folk garage punk rockish band Strung Like A Horse started Day 2 of Hulaween off with a menacing bang!  This was the first opportunity to see the band live, but I had heard these guys and girl were a good time.  They kept with the Halloween cover theme with songs from The Ramones “I Wanna Be Sedated,” The Beatles “Eleanor Rigby,” and The Pixies infamous “Where Is My Mind.” Let’s not forget about their classics like “Gypsy Jane” and “Horizontal” which were both accompanied by the beautiful and talented Lacy Jo.  The bands unique sound and style incorporates elements from many different musical influences to make quite the show.  It’s like being at a bluegrass show, while raging to a metal infused punk band, and having peaceful folk melodies sang all at the same time.  I guess I’ve been bitten by the “Strung Like A Horse bug” cause I’m already planning my next show.  Tis’ truly a fun show!

The Heavy Pets

The Heavy Pets existence on the main stage was real.  We had the honor of listening to the bands 1000th show!  The Heavy Pets 1000th show was a super funky, get-down with the get-down kind of set.  They snuck a classic Nirvana cover in too, “Heart Shaped Box.”  The band from South Florida never fails to deliver a good time.

Nahko & Medicine For The People

Nahko & Medicine For The People took the amphitheater in white CDC jumpsuits.  The band changed up the costumes right on stage in between “On The Verge” and, “Vultures Of Culture”, taking off the jumpsuits and revealing all-black police uniforms.  Dustin of Medicine for the people gave praise and gratitude for the Suwannee River during the set.  It is truly a blessing to get the opportunity to see a world-renowned band play in such a wholesome environment.  The band’s message is always one of motivation and inspiration.  The positivity and good vibes felt during this performance will stay with me for many years to come.   Nahko & MFTP is an inspirational show filled with sensual sounds and moving messages.  Check out who they are and what they stand for on their main website.   Hope they’re coming your way.

Keller Williams

Hulaween is full of many tricks and treats.  No treat bigger than the highly anticipated Blue Grass Surprise on Saturday evening, which was none other than Keller Williams & Friends.  The friends were kept secret right up till the last minute, of course.  Keller is known for collaborating with a wide range of crowds, so the possibilities were endless.  Promptly at 5:15, Keller took the stage with the very talented Nicky Sanders of the Steep Canyon Rangers and Reed Mathis of Tea Leaf Green.  If you ever get the chance to see either of the bands Steep Canyon Rangers or Tea Leaf Green, do yourself a favor and go.  The trio kept with the spirit of Halloween and delivered several classic covers; from “Scarlet Begonias” to “Wish You Were Here.”  They ended their set and started the night all at the same time with “Born To Be Wild.”   This was not the last of Keller or his good friend Nick Sanders, later to be seen jamming out with Cheese.

CONSPIRATOR

Chris Michetti, Marc Brownstein, Aron Magner, and Torch make up the ever-popular Conspirator.  Together the foursome is exploring music to new sounds.  It was now dark and the chill of the lake was quickly upon us, but all it took was some Conspirator to dance to and warm the bones right up.  We had an unexpected surprise when Dominic Lalli was introduced on stage, twas’ a Gigantic Conspiracy, almost.  It was no wonder the band played right before Cheese.  These guys really know how to get the people up and moving.

SCI Day 2 Set 1

Everyone was still buzzing from last night’s Incident.  Most of us had just run over from the Conspirator show and were raring to go.   The Incident was started heavy with drums in the Latin like beats of “Search” and a super funky “Lost.”  The first honorary Cheese guest of the night was Nicky Sanders on the fiddle from The Steep Canyon Rangers for an old Rusty Wier cover, “Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance.”  That’s just a real good ol’ country song.  K-Dub was then introduced on stage to join them all and play a Keith song; “resume man”, which happens to be Keller’s Mom’s favorite song.  The band picked back up with a frighteningly jazzy “Pack It Up.”  With a little crowd roar, Keller came back out on stage for a very Swamp friendly “Alligator Alley.”  What a fun song for a festival in Florida, good pick.  That rolled away into “Franklin’s Tower,” mixed with an underlying “Take a Walk on the Wild Side.”

SCI Day 2 Set 2

Now it was a good time to go outside our minds and play on the Ferris wheel.  “Black Clouds” drifted through the air spicing up a cool breeze.   The most soulful “Bird land-Flying East Jam” you ever heard with the Manhattan School of Music Graduate, Mr. Dominic Lalli.  A mystical Jam to be known as the “Live Oak Jam”, hinted of a trance, but where were they taking it…  A slow fiddle was gliding in, when the drums and bass took a beat and more keys to back it up and getting deep into the beginning electric melodies of “River Trance.”   The sounds dabbled deeper into a “Swamp”, and took us home.  A whimsical “BollyMunster” curved melodies and layered lyrics to encore and end the Saturday Night Hulaween Incident.

BIG GIGANTIC

Cheese was done for the day, but the night was still young.  Following a Saturday Night Incident is no small task, but these two talented gents were up to the challenge.  Dominic Lalli, saxophonist for Big Gigantic, had been a busy man already making guest appearances with Conspirator and Cheese.  Big Gigantic took the stage shortly after the clock struck midnight on the chilly Saturday night of Hulaween.  Campers were quickly awakened and warmed with loud, wild sounds from their new album “The Night Is Young.”  Hands down this was one of the most fun shows of Hulaween.  Whether you saw the bright lights and screens synchronize to the music on stage or was chilling at the campsite, you probably still heard the show.  Fireworks lit the sky as the Boulder natives played new and old tracks, along with epic covers such as “Can I Get A” and “Let Me Clear My Throat,” right into “Get on Up.”   The saxy-duo are just a couple of fans of great music who moonlight the stage as Rock Stars.  Big Gigantic brought it and then some for the second year in a row and we can all only hope it will be a reoccurring party at The Suwannee Hulaween.
