Halloween with the Ghoul Train

Halloween on a Saturday is a rare and a special kind of party that has not happened since 2009, and won’t happen again until 2020. This was a genuine Saturday night Halloween Incident that we had on our hands featuring The String Cheese Incident. The first set started off hot and fast, and all of a sudden we were deep in a ‘Rivertrance’, putting the crowd right where they wanted to be.

Red lights shined above the stage as the train drove into focus and those classic letters lit up, GOUL TRAIN. Billy Nershi shouts out GOUUUUUUL TRAIN to announce its arrival.

Wu-Tang Clan’s own GZA, dressed the role as Don Cornelius from Soul Train to host the event. The beautiful dancers took the stage in grand ’70s fashion. In true Halloween spirit, this was the mecca of funk cover classics. Music ranged from Earth, Wind, & Fire to the hardest workingman in show business, James Brown.

The band closed out their set by paying tribute to Sly & The Family Stone as the train steamed into the station. Lights clapped, confetti snowed, pyrotechnic sparks shot from the stage area, and dancers skated and danced across the stage.

It was the funkiest Incident I’d ever had the pleasure of being apart of. When I was growing up, I spent time watching re-runs of Soul Train late on Saturday nights, but this was the real deal. As the Goul Train ended, GZA signed off, “peace and soul!” It was one funky ride!

After a quick breath and stretch, the band picked right back up. This was some aged to perfection, tasty cheese. The Antibalas Horns made up of James Walton, Martin Perna, Jordan McLean, & Raymond Mason is becoming a staple of Hulaween. The band ended with a groovy rendition of Rosie. SCI led a groovy sing a long of an encore with a little Stevie Wonder and Sister Sledge. It was one-of-a-kind special funky ride.
