Tesla Motors is changing the automotive industry, and the conversation on clean energy.
Automotive consumers in the past have been conditioned to understand the miles per gallon that a vehicle will drive. Larger vehicles range from 10-20 mpg, and hybrids range from 40 -50 mpg.
This is a recent trend of how consumers have looked at purchasing automobiles over the past decade.
A newer method to looking at your vehicle and personal devices is by the kilo-watt per hour. Forbes recently reported that it take 1kWh to run a cell phone for a year.
In an automotive sense, it is expressed as kilowatt-hour per 100 miles (kW-hrs/100 mi). Take a look at Tesla’s Roadster in comparison to two hybrids.
Roadster: 30 kWh / 100 mi
LEAF: 33 kWh / 100 mi
Volt: 36 kWh / 100 mi
The numbers can be debated, but the conversation has changed from using gasoline to fuel a vehicle, to charging a vehicle from home and charging stations, as well as the type of clean energy fueling your car and home.
The transition is taking place right now. In three short years, Model S drivers have racked up 1 billion miles on the road. These electric miles help decrease 570,000 tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
