Tesla Motors released a series of updates for their Model S to give users an autonomous driving experience on the road. The software that has been released for drivers to give them the opportunity to allow the car to use sensors and technology to avoid unnecessary accidents.
Self-driving technology has been in production since 2007 with the Lexus LS 460. Large tech companies have been heavily investing in developing autonomous services in the past two years, and that pattern is looking to continue into 2016.
Consumer Reports downloaded the software for a test run in late October. They noted that the software update works on cars built after September 2014.
Tesla has disclosed that the updates operate with a forward radar, a forward-looking camera, 12 long-range ultrasonic sensors positioned to sense 16 feet around the car in every direction at all speeds, and a high-precision digitally-controlled electric assist braking system. Additionally, they have said that cars with the version 7.0 software can scan for a parking spaces, alert the driver when one is available, and parallel park on command.
These functions will help cut down on the accidents on the road, and provide a safer environment for motorists.
