Doctor Thorne is Threaded with a Downton Abbey Style of Fabric

Amazon Studios & Julian Fellowes Presents Doctor Thorne, based on a series of books by Anthony Trollope. The show stars Tom Hollander, Ian McShane and Alison Brie, will premiere exclusively for Prime members in the U.S. on May 20.

The show resembles Downton Abbey in several ways. Julian Fellowes wrote Downton Abbey and Gosford Park, where he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The costume department reconnects with historic dresses and outfits, and the actors showcase a classical style.

This show, as well as Downton Abbey creates a dialogue between characters that I find to be backwards thinking. In a filmmaking sense, you want to keep it as accurate to that time period as possible. My theory is that film producers should focus on creating forward thinking dialogue without science fiction. As media producers, we shape the way the world looks at itself. I reshape the world to make it a better place. If you can achieve that by glorying the mistakes of the past, then go right ahead. I don’t see it being as effective, but it is easy to consume.
