Bluegrass Legend Releases Seventh Album on Sugar Hill Records

Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss and Deborah Holland join Sam Bush for his 2016 release of Storyman.

Storyman starts off with ‘Play by Your Own Rules’ with a fast-paced mandolin picking away with the distinct “Sam Bush Sound” on the record. I would group this with the newgrass revival sound that originated in the ’80s & ’90s with Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas and many others.

The soul of those jam sessions continues as Bush performs a unique blend of folk music with layers of rock, alternative country and contemporary bluegrass.

‘Lefty’s Song’ is a brilliant piece of music. It tells a thoughtful story, and it features grammy award-winning musicians with Bush and Alison Krauss. The two share vocals and creative energy on this track. Sam Bush finds a way to make me want to dance and break down in tears simultaneously.

Béla and Sam seem to enjoy banjo humor. I’ll try at my best/bad banjo joke. What tool do banjo players use to roof a house? A clawhammer.

Emmylou Harris sings and guests on ‘Mandmics Killed Country Music’ with a more traditional style track. Bush and Harris harmonize well together on vocals.

Sam Bush produced this album himself. I understand the creative freedom, but I would like to see him work with different producers around the globe to give his sound additional depth. It is a great accomplishment to produce seven albums. Sam Bush still fires on all cylinders, and his live show will showcase that energy.
