Trainer Todd Pletcher and Jockey John Velazquez Celebrates their Second career Kentucky Derby Wins on May 6, 2017

The 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby took place today in Churchill Downs.

Irish War Cry and jockey Rajiv Maragh were heavy favorites leading into the race.

Always Dreaming picked up the win with trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez. This marked the trainer and jockey’s second career Kentucky Derby win.

The weather played a major role in the environment. With wet conditions, the racetrack was a muddy mess overall.
