The Smartphone Game Could Be Ready by 2019, and the Film Is Aiming for a 2020-2021 Release
Nintendo and Mario is expanding their reach in the upcoming years with plans to produce smartphone gaming, a feature animated film, and theme park attractions.
The smartphone game will be one of the first products Nintendo will rollout in the near future. They have seen the rise in gaming on smartphones, and have decided to tap into that market with Mario Kart Tour. The game is scheduled to be released on Android and on the IOS platforms.
Nintendo has released the following statement on social media.
The checkered flag has been raised and the finish line is near. A new mobile application is now in development: Mario Kart Tour! #MarioKartTour Releasing in the fiscal year ending in March 2019. pic.twitter.com/8GIyR7ZM4z

A second major project that Nintendo is developing is an animated film with Illumination. They will be partnering on a movie starring Mario, and it will be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri.
If the development of the film goes accordingly, the earliest it could be released would be around 2020. I predict that there will be some issues getting a storyline developed, and the film will most likely see a release in 2021.
The third upcoming project from Nintendo is a themed area coming to Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood, but there is no time frame set.
Each of these major projects will take a substantial amount of time to produce, and obtain a green light from Nintendo.
