Fresh Food Takes Center Stage
Farm Aid the concert is taking place this year in Bristow, Virginia on September 17. Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Dave Matthews and a group of soulful musicians will celebrate the hard work that goes into Farm Aid with a day filled with award-winning music.
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats will host a special Farm Aid Eve live event at Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, Virginia on Thursday, September 16.
In addition to the live entertainment at Farm Aid, the organization also helps farmers develop and sustain farms. If you are a farmer, and need more information, browse over their online resources.
Farm Aid does an excellent job of helping farmers that have experience, but I talk with a lot of people just starting off as farmers, or other people that are interested in farming and gardening, and may have not taken the first step to getting seeds in the ground.
For those that may want to farm, and do not have the physical space; community farming within certain cities is a great way to help a farm, find out how the weather affects vegetation, and build experience. After building skills in agriculture, it would come time to plant some of your first seeds at home. Below is a visual list of plants that I found to be healthy and easy to grow at home for a first time farmer.
Kale, Sweet potatoes, spinach and carrots all have health benefits. These vegetables are also versatile and delicious. After growing your own vegetables, you might want to build upon your garden, or trade with other farmers. It is a gradual process that can lead to health and happiness. In addition, supporting farmers that have built a strong foundation for agriculture is also just as important.
