The first round of performances at the Pre-Party presented by Pizza Hut included: Go Down Moses, Classixx and Magic Man. The first six acts were able to perform for 30-45 minute sets with the second half of groups each performing hour long sets for the Pre-Party crowd.

We caught the last few tracks in the Magic Man concert on the Red Bull Sound Select Stage. Last year that stage was known as the BMI Stage. This year the BMI Stage made a move, and the ‘Letting Go Stage’ was renamed the Palladia Stage. The Boom Boom Tent, Chevrolet and Hangout Stages remained in the same location.

Magic Man hosted the first performance on the Red Bull Stage with success. The band has a new album titled ‘Before the Waves’ coming out July 8. The band wrapped their set with a live heart-stopping version of ‘Paris’.

Bonobo, a.k.a Simon Green is a DJ from New York that has been cutting and remixing music since 2000. His set at the 2014 Hangout Music Festival was an excellent way for Bonobo to break into the summer touring season with intensity. The performance was tailored well to the time frame of the set. The music was engaging, but not overwhelming to experience. It was a solid set of EDM during the late afternoon hours on Thursday.

After the Bonobo set of electronic dance music in the Boom Boom Tent, we made our way around the festival grounds to see what was going down around the event. Pizza Hut catered and provided free pizza for guests at the Pre-Party. It was the first time I have seen food given out at a music festival. Cheers to the festival and Pizza Hut for offering the complimentary pizza. Coke-a-Cola was also back this year providing free beverages for most of the weekend.

In the grand scheme of things, I see the Hangout Music Festival for being one of the smartest festivals in the scene today for their ability to balance corporate interaction and an organic/independent viewing experience. The festival grounds are super clean; to the point where guests help pick up in between sets.

The crowd and staff are some of the best people on earth. In contrast, when Bonnaroo first started, guests and staff we mainly from the Tennessee area. It has grown very similar to the growth at the Hangout Music Festival based out of Alabama. The difference between the growth in these two events is that The Hangout Music Festival organizers have learned from the mistakes made by Bonnaroo. By the fourth year at Bonnaroo, the music had gone mainstream, and the crowd was no longer a diehard group of music lovers, but merely a set disconnected groups that lost or never found out what true/independent music is all about.

A beautiful difference to the Hangout Music Festival is the care and thought that goes into providing authentic musicians to mainstream audiences. 92 ZEW provides a live stream and backstage interviews during the event. As I drove into Gulf Shores I listened to the different radio stations, (some of the local commercials were hilarious).

Samuel Beam, better known by his stage and recording name Iron & Wine, provided a live acoustic session for the radio listeners. It was delightful being able to coast into town on Thursday with this live performance on air. He played later that evening from 7:00-8:00 on the Palladia Stage.

Danny Brown, rapper and producer brought a heavy handed set of filthy hip-hop to the Boom Boom Tent on Thursday evening. His set layered well in between Bonobo and Girl Talk in the Boom Boom Tent. The intensity continued to progress throughout Thursday.

It was my first time seeing Brown perform on stage. His DJ warmed up the crowd and he delivered a lyrical combination from the depths of Detroit, Michigan. You could feel his street like persona flow right through the microphone. Danny Brown is an unpolished and uncut form of hip-hop for the next generation.

Wolfmother kept the show on the road with their rambunctious form of nostalgic rock. Their set was a standard rock show that didn’t stray too far away from their commercial base sound that I had heard on television, the Internet and the radio.

The band has provided their entire set to stream on YouTube right now. It appears the footage was shot by Palladia, but may also have been done by the Wolfmother road crew. Overall, the footage came out excellent, and it is a treat that Wolfmother has allowed it to stream on YouTube. Watch their entire set from the Hangout Music Festival.

The Thursday pre-party roared into action with a slew of sets starting at 4 in the afternoon.  The band from New Orleans, Dumpstaphunk had a soul inspiring performance on the Red Bull Sound Select stage.  Dumpstaphunk took the stage for the 9pm set, the music put the crowd in a state of euphoria, with a heritage deeply rooted in jazz their display of their craft is remarkable and can only be described as an enjoyable funk session that begs the body to move to the music.  I would like to crown Dumpstaphunk with the best crowd award for Hangout 2014.

Gregg Gillis, a.k.a Girl Talk, is a producer with a long running track record of remastering commercial music for a hyperactive generation of young people. This set was my third time seeing him perform, and it was the third time Gregg had performed at the Hangout Music Festival. He mentioned during his set he was grateful to have been able to play the first two years at the festival, and was honored to close down music at the Pre-Party this year.

One element I love about Girl Talk is the passion that Gillis shows in his music and on stage. If you dislike commercial music, I get it, but it is hard to dismiss the energy that Gillis puts in each set.

Overall, his set was the best headlining set of the weekend in regards to how the crowd looked walking out. I felt more energy coming out of his show in comparison to the other headliners. Girl Talk appeared to be excited about his performance as well.
