+30,000 attendees from around the world converge in Arrington, Virginia for the 2014 Lockn’ Music Festival.

The festival opened with a more structured camping system that left guests in a better mood overall this year in comparison to last year. Camping gates opened at 6 a.m. on Thursday with thousands of guests rolling in Oak Ridge Farm.

Nicholas Hess is a photographer for Crescent Vale, and met me at the gate when I arrived around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. We parked in the camping grounds and began to walk the festival grounds to find our friends from Illinois at the Infinity Campground.

“To infinity and beyond.” – Buzz Lightyear

Nicholas and I joked about the Toy Story reference being setup within the campground name. Most likely, the campground name was not named after Toy Story. In addition, we did not find our friends within the camping area. It was nice how the festival grounds had multiple camping sections setup for campers to get setup around the main stage area. (We later found our friends in a different campground).

The festival is excellent at taking feedback and working it back into the production. One element I would recommend would be to have a handbook with maps, schedules, gates, vendors and additional information. Digital content, and the paper is good, but a handbook is key for several attendees.

The No BS Brass Band was playing as Nicholas and I were finding our way around the grounds. Brass horns echoed through the Blue Ridge Mountains just southeast of the Smokey Mountains. Clear skies and warm temperatures provided guests with a healthy amount of vitamin D.

One of the main draws for me to this event is a group from New Orleans known as The Revivalists. After seeing them expand their sound over the past two years, it can be noted that this band has solidified their spot in modern music.

The Revivalists broke out new material during their late afternoon set on Thursday. The southern rockers went into ‘Criminal’ and other original hits, as well as bringing out Eric Krasno, guitarist from Lettuce and Soulive, for a special cover of The Rolling Stones ‘Gimme Shelter’ to cap off their set.

Immediately following the fast paced southern rockers was the smooth and relaxing music by The Wood Brothers featuring Oliver, Chris Wood and Jano Rix on drums. It was my first time seeing the group as a trio with a drummer. The percussion added reinforcement to their soulful hand-crafted songs.

Chris layered the song with New York jazz inspired grooves to the acoustic/folk style of the trio. It contrasted nicely to the country fueled guitar riffs by Oliver. They band played new and older tracks such as ‘Postcards from Hell’ during their Friday set.

Lettuce is a type of hand cut New York funk that grew out of the jamming with fellow musicians during the Soulive era. Another major draw for me was being able to see my friends in Lettuce perform together.

James Brown would have fit right in with this group. The band guest spotted the No BS Brass Band during their set to give their horn section even more depth. During the Soulive era the band would bring in guests to sit in for the horn section. Lettuce now recreated those past superjams with one of kind performances each night with new unique lineups at almost every festival they play.

Umphrey’s McGee time schedule was dialed in for both of their sets. Brendan Bayliss (guitar, vocals), Jake Cinninger (guitar, vocals), Joel Cummins (keyboards, vocals), Andy Farag (percussion), Kris Myers (drums, vocals), Ryan Stasik (bass, no vocals) comprise one of the most dominating groups in modern live music.
Their sets at Lockn’ showcase newer material from “Similar Skin” and older favorites. They ended their second set with a Pink Floyd cover ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’ in true form. The band did such a great job with the cover, within a few cords of the song opening several audience members mentioned they instantly knew that it was going to be a crazy ending to the band’s set.
The song has deeper meanings within Pink Floyd history. It was covered masterfully at Lockn’ 2014, and I hope the band breaks it out more in the future.

[av_textblock]
The String Cheese Incident  has been on fire this past summer, and continued their hot streak at Lockn’ 2014 with a special Kool and the Gang themed set, with JT Taylor from the group sitting in for some classic live songs. It has been a new way to merge old and new music for the Colorado group. After seeing the band six times going into the weekend, I walked out with another four sets and two nights of music with the band.

It was a pleasure to walk into the main stage area and hear the String Cheese Incident playing in the distance. The band’s acoustic style played well off the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their Kool and the Gang set was a funky throwback that reminded me of how much fun one can have when they are not taking themselves too seriously. SCI only appears to be getting better and stronger over the years in experience.
