Friday, the 31st of October was finally upon us.  Ah yes.  Halloween, one of my most-highly anticipated holidays.  We awoke early Halloween morning to the smell of bacon and sound of laughter.  There were indeed many tricks and treats to be had on this freakish Friday.  The day had a perfect mixture of sun shine with a cool breeze.  After a round of mimosas, we all started our costume metamorphosis.  One might have saw me stunting around in a hand crafted, Evel Kineval costume.  Two words Duck Tape.  We noticed a group of guys playing Frisbee next to our campsite.  After engaging in a little Frisbee, we started talking and realized they were in the local Florida band Post Pluto. 

Post Pluto

The free-spirited band we had played Frisbee with earlier; Post Pluto, started the music off this Halloween at Suwannee.  After jamming-out to Post Pluto at the Spirit Lake Stage, we headed through the busy shake down towards the main stage. 

Greensky Bluegrass

Greensky Bluegrass graced the main stage on Friday the 31st.  Despite all the monsters and ghouls of Halloween, we were blessed with 5 string pickin’ angels, known as Greensky Bluegrass.  The bands presence made for an angelic Halloween afternoon.  The southern Michigan bluegrass band never ceases to amaze.  It’s not every day you hear an angel quote, “High as a giraffes hat.”

Finally it was time.  Yes, all the hard work and planning had all lead up to this.  The long anticipated, never duplicated HALLOWEEN INCIDENT.  String Cheese Incident took the stage for the first time during the weekend as the sun laid to rest.  The evening was started off with the popular yet eerie “Friday the 13th Jam.”  Followed by several Cheese classics like Moseley’s “Joyful Sound” and an epic “Valley Of the Jig.”  The band did a quick wardrobe transformation into the ghoulish after-life Rock Spirits they truly are.  This cool All Hallows’ Eve night was about to get a lot more freakish.

SPHONGLE    

Sphongle was entrusted to mesmerize the outlandish looking crowd while provoking a natural spirit of dance all at the same time.  The psychedelic, psybient duo did just that.  Treats were coming in the form of tricks. 

SCI Halloween Set 2

Fog arose as the band’s presence took the main stage with the beautiful Rhonda Thomas and the one-and-only Tony White.  And could it really be, yes, the Antibalas Horns all the way from Brooklyn, NY for the second consecutive year.  The renowned four-piece horn section sets the perfect super-natural vibe for Hulaween.  The second set was started with a little Rolling Stones number called “Sympathy For the Devil”, maybe you’ve heard of it.  The whole set was Halloween based, and what could be more Halloween than Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghost Busters.”  When the band Wings was covered Flames barreled from the stage when Billy sang those commemorated words “Live and Let Die.”  It was a maze of covers after that.  From Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven”, to The Doors “Break On Through”, right into the classic Talking Heads “Heaven.”  And back into the incendiary “Live and Let Die.”  You can’t fully celebrate Halloween without a giant Michael Jackson zombie dancing to the 1982 hit “Thriller,” which is how the second Halloween Cheese set ended.

The third set was started with a brisk howl at the moon, followed by a very funky; horn filled “Miss Brown’s Teahouse.”     Bill serenaded us with a haunting “Hotel Window.”  The band lifted the crowd’s feet with an electric “Rosie,” and with the help of the Antibalas Horns rolled into an unearthly “Zombie,” and popped right back into “Rosie.”  This year’s Halloween incident was ended with Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.”  Wow, them boys sure do know how to throw a Halloween Party.

Beats Antique

The clock was about to strike twelve with a bright moon high above when Beats Antique took the amphitheater with their cacophonic Creature Carnival.  The inventive trio hailing from Oakland, CA was the perfect Treat for Halloween Night. 

Thievery Corporation

Thievery Corporation rocked us into the late chilly Friday Halloween night back at the main stage.  This was my first time seeing the band live, and “it will not be my last.”  The supernal lyrics transfused with swirling symphonic melodies made for an enraptured feeling.  All around were lit up hoola-hoopers dancing; shaping the crowd and band as one.

Grandpa’s Cough Medicine

The Jacksonville local band Grandpa’s Cough Medicine kicked up some dirt at Spirit Lake.  While the bluegrass trio picked the fire roared from the giant art fixtures spread around the lake.  It was a mystical, magical, mind-wandering place, full of jellyfish bounce parties and blinking mazes to no end all inside a ferocious toothed monster.     

Billy Gilmore’s Jam

The infamous Billy Gilmore straying all the way from Palm Beach, FL was the perfect early morning bluegrass feel one needs at the witching hour on All Hallows’ Eve.  He brought some fast fingerpicking dancing along with good wholesome lyrics.  Billy was exactly what the Dr. ordered.  One big dose of blue grass before bed please.
