The New York Times visited Portland, Oregon in early September to give an overview on the area and culture. Fritzie Andrade, Ava Benjamin, Andrew Hida, Will Lloyd and Sarah Brady Voll helped produce a vivid walkthrough of the city.

Portland, Oregon is becoming a hot travel destination. Personally, I am find their view on renewable energy to be very attractive. Here are some interesting points about Portland to gather some more background on the area.

  1. There is no sales tax in Oregon. This is one of the rare states that has no sales tax (except on hotels and car rentals). The state makes up for it by having a fairly high income tax (9%). However, when you weigh the overall tax burden of Oregon, we usually come out about average of all the 50 states. (Source link.)
  2. Oregon is one of the nation’s leading generators of hydroelectric power, ranking second, after Washington, in net electricity generation from conventional hydroelectric power in 2013. (Source link.)
  3. Portland is the only major US city to have a dormant volcano within city limits. Dormant means the volcano is sleeping and there is the potential that it could wake up at some point.(Source link.)
