the hybrid offspring of a donkey and a zebra.
Umphrey’s McGee have announced a the release date of Friday, November 11 for their upcoming studio album ZONKEY.
This album captures the blending of different songs with their live mashups. These interpretations of different songs layered together is an ongoing tradition with Umphrey’s McGee.
ZONKEY takes listeners on a historic ride through over 40 years in music.
“ZONKEY clearly pays homage to some of our favorite artists and songs. While we’ve tried to reproduce the spirit of the original compositions and recordings, we’ve also tried to have some fun with the structure as we’ve often combined seemingly dissimilar musical elements to create a new vibe altogether,” notes keyboardist Joel Cummins.
When I first heard the word zonkey, I thought it was related to wonky by the meaning of the word. Since I was so far off base about the meaning of zonkey, I added the definition of it at the top of the article. It does shine light on the mutation of combining two unlike objects.
The result of creating a hybrid from two different forms of music hints at the quote from Umphrey’s McGee’s drummer, Joel Cummins.
Pre-orders for the album start Friday, September 9 via Umphrey’s McGee main website.
