Chance the Rapper Picks up Seven Nominations
The GRAMMY Awards have just announced their 2017 nominees for the 59th GRAMMYs taking place at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 12 at 8 p.m. EST.
First, congratulations to all the artists that were selected as nominees.
Second, Chance the Rapper should be listed for the Album of the Year and Record of the Year. His album Coloring Book is the album of the year. He is not a new artist. He started releasing music four years ago.
Yesterday, I had a Australian pop group send over material that was extremely similar to American pop music. It lacked diversity overall. And when I look at the recent GRAMMY nominations, I get the same feeling, and feel that musicians all over the world are putting too much value on pop music that has been stale for decades.
Today, the GRAMMYs failed to send over the nominees, but was able to send it to every major media outlet to build attention for their event.
The Sundance Film Festival takes indie artists, provides them a national/international platform to share their work, and then if effective, these films get bought and released by major film studios.
What the music industry in the United States fails to do is cultivate and build new artists. They put serious money in advertising in certain artists, and act like their hand-selected picks are the only ones with talent.
In reality, mainstream music is just like mainstream media. It is watered down for easy consumption.
Indie artists have to work so much harder to get their work scene, and that is why I am sticking up for them right now. It is also because the public deep down loves indie acts that put in the extra effort. Why the public doesn’t buy more indie music is because it is slightly harder to consume, due to having depth and substance.
Now, I know the GRAMMYs was hoping for a big pat on the back for all their hard work on selecting these artists, but in reality, I am the bar your event has to pass. Go ahead and read the other previews, look at how they kiss up for ratings. When you are talented, you can tell the establishment to screw off, and they will listen.
