Borahm Lee and Anti-Alias, two members of the Pretty Lights Live Band ensemble, debuted the first installment of “Harmonic Fusion,” a journey into realtime audio visual synthesis in Boulder, Colorado on Sunday, March 23.

Borham Lee is a keyboardist and producer for Pretty Lights Live Band as well as Break Science. Jack Hurley, also known as Anti-Alias, is a multimedia artist and visual jockey (VJ). The duo has performed with the wider Pretty Lights Live Band at venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Brooklyn Mirage, and Hampton Coliseum. For Harmonic Fusion, they collaborated to bring an immersive performance into a new setting: Fiske Planetarium.

Fiske Planetarium, nested on campus at the University of Colorado Boulder, is a 200-seat planetarium built in 1975. The 65-foot diameter dome boasts an 8K resolution projection screen and built-in 7.1 channel surround sound. Reinforced, low-end sound was provided by Shakedown Productions, a local Colorado promotions company.

The result? A sold out, immersive and encompassing audio-visual display that transported the audience into a euphoric world of color, light, and sound.

Twoleggedzoo opened the evening with a 45-minute ambient set complemented by nature-inspired mandala visuals by Floso. The audience was transported from woodland nature scenes to the depths of space, including the rocky rings of Saturn.

The Harmonic Fusion set began with a darkened planetarium screen, quoting the spoken word of late filmmaker and transcendentalist David Lynch, “Life is filled with abstractions, and the only way we make heads or tails of it is through intuition.”

What followed was a seamless blend of music across genres and time periods, including Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good,” No Doubt’s “Hella Good,” and Radiohead’s “Everything in its Right Place,” which is sampled in the classic Pretty Lights mash up “Pretty Lights vs Radiohead vs Nirvana vs NIN.” Lee guided the audience through a sonic journey that felt somehow like a yearning and a remembering, refocusing on what makes us human including themes of love, time, and presence. Anti-Alias provided the visual scene, dazzling the audience with colorful displays of concentric circles and patterns that felt nebulous yet coordinated. Several times throughout the performance, Lee would play the keys and the dome screen would light up with neon piano key silhouettes, engulfing the audience in a synchronistic audio-visual experience.

Altogether, it was a noteworthy evening that pushed the boundaries of the live-music experience into something more spiritual. The real time synthesis of audio and visuals, paired with the unique planetarium setting, transported the audience into a sublime landscape that felt like a breath of fresh air. It was refreshing to experience a new way to experience live music, rather than crowded dancefloors and long lines at the bar in oversold venues late at night.

While this was the first Harmonic Fusion performance, we certainly hope it won’t be the last. Who knows, perhaps the creators are setting their sights on hosting something similar in Sin City one day.
