ALO, a San Francisco-based alternative rock group, rallies strong with their recent release Tangle of Time. 

The album was supported with Pledge Music to give fans a chance to interact with the band, pick up music lessons from the group, and support the new project at the same time.

During my first three listens of this album, I found myself focusing on the beat structure and timing more than the lyrics. After a few times going over the material, I was able to dig deeper into the meaning of the album.

After interviewing and getting to know ALO, the band showcases an unconditional passion and love for music. Their goal is to continue to push the boundaries of their abilities as musicians, and leave the world a better place.

Zach Gill’s songwriting continue to mirror his personal relationship with his family, and indirectly shows his personal development as a songwriter within his words.

With Tangle Of Time I get a sense that the band has matured as songwriters, family figures, and band members. Regardless their age, they still continue their goal of giving audiences material to enjoy, and something to dance to all day. ‘Not Old Yet’ is a song on the album that showcases the youthful spirit within the band.

The album starts off with an upbeat track titled ‘There Was A Time’ on Tangle Of Time. It draws listeners in with a delicate electric guitar from Dan Lebowitz. He is partnered with Zach Gill on vocals and accordion. Gill belts out a bold and enticing style of accordion playing on this track.

Steve Adams and David Brogan put together a southern California groove for the throwback/laid back jam known as ‘Push’ for the second track. Each band member highlights their talents with this project. Lebowitz adds vocals to ‘Push’ with Gill to harmonize and play off each other.

‘The Ticket’ opens with a Talking Heads ‘This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)’ inspired guitar intro that informs the audience right away to get ready for a special song. In addition to being a great song, this one also parallels well with an animated video by Josh Clark of Tea Leaf Green.

ALO continues their +20 years as a band with a new blend California surf rock, alternative jam, along with soul/pop music that sparks inspiration and imagination for multiple generations.

When listening to this album, I feel it evokes a sense of adventure within the instrumentation of the group. The roots within the percussion on Tangle Of Time resonate with the band’s early years playing with the band for James Brown.

After two decades of finding their sound, ALO now has the ability to trailblaze coast to coast with new material under their wing.
