Firefly Music Festival just announced their 2017 lineup with The Weeknd, Muse, Twenty One Pilots, Chance the Rapper and Bob Dylan headlining the four day event.

The festival will be held in the woodlands of Delaware from June 15-18.

Additional acts include: Busta Rhymes, OK Go, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Lil Dicky, Spiritual Rez, and over 140 live musical acts.

This lineup showcases a large amount of unknown acts. This could be a huge launchpad for the bands to create memorable performances this upcoming June.

A critique about this lineup is that I find it to be dull overall. Music festivals are really more than a bunch of standard sets back-to-back.

When we look at the longest running music festivals for wisdom, we can see that the Newport Jazz Festival, and the New Orleans Jazz Festival hold two of the longest running events in the United States.

The reason Bonnaroo and the music festival trend became popular, is due to Bonnaroo taking the New Orleans Jazz Festival experience out of New Orleans, and put it on a farm in Tennessee. For those that have attended Jazz Fest, it is a daytime festival at a racetrack with late night performances spread out over town in intimate venues. These late night shows will showcase live collaborations between the bands. That collaboration process is what made Bonnaroo popular. It is what created the drive for the Firefly Music Festival. Now, the festival organizers, in this case was a group of young people that most likely never attended Jazz Fest or Bonnaroo, may now have a better understanding of the differences between what a music festival can produce, and a standard concert experience.
