Uber Jamming in Central Ohio

Humid air filled the windshield of the vehicle as we drove up Interstate 57 to the 17th Annual All Good Music Festival in Thornville, Ohio. The 4 a.m. night sky glistened above as we drove northeast from Southern Illinois. A group of guests followed us on the roadway. This year marks the first year the Crescent Vale Network is covering the All Good Festival, and we plan to provide in depth content to easily skim through.

Thick fog pumped through grasslands and forested regions in Indiana and Ohio the early morning hours of Thursday, July 18. When we arrived to Lakewood High School for press check in I was met by a friendly and professional crew to sign in for media. After check in we headed to the Legend Valley festival grounds to setup camp.

We entered through the western section of the campgrounds at Gate 1. It was my first time setting up camp at the All Good Music Festival in Ohio, and I quickly found out that we were one day too late for the wooden area camping spots. This is a clear sign of a strong demand for the festival overall. Field camping is not my favorite, but our neighbors made up for the blazing heat with cool vibes all weekend. The crowd overall was very supportive for one another. That camaraderie between people is sometimes lost at music festivals. It was a relief to feel connected with so many people at once all weekend.

John Scofield Uberjam Band

The group wanted to check out the festival grounds before the John Scofield Uberjam Band took the stage for the first performance of the weekend just after 7:30 p.m.. The Uberjam was a tight blend of traditional jazz, hip-hop, rock and electronic music together with a talented cast of musicians including: Andy Hess, Avi Bortnik and Adam Deitch.

Rhythms from all over the world could be felt during the Toubab Krewe performance. Unique instruments carried a mix of West Africa beats through the guests at the Crane Stage from 8:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Papadosio amped up the crowd to the right level before the Lettuce performance created a funky stir near Buckeye Lake Thursday night. Nigel Hall sat in for Neal Evens on keyboard for this performance. Both keyboardists bring their own attributes to the stage. Hall busted out vocals on top of a James Brown cover to ‘The Payback’ for the All Good guests. The entire set was a fireball of funk music from start to finish.

Yonder Mountain String Band 11:00 p.m – 1:00 a.m.

The Yonder Mountain String Band show at All Good on Thursday was my sixteenth time watching the band live on stage. My first show was at Bonnaroo 2003. Ten years later I walked into the photo pit with love and support from the crowd. I was one of the first photographers that made it to the pit, and I was greeted with a row of high fives that I will never forget. The love in the front row crowd can sometimes overshadow the passion on stage. I have mentioned before that the crowd is just as important as the entertainment. The All Good Music Festival guests make almost every moment unforgettable.

The band tuned their instruments, thanked the crowd and dove right into a righteous version of ‘Snow on the Pines’ to kick things off for their Thursday night set. Guests roared for more music all set. Nicholas Hess, photographer for Crescent Vale, mentioned he was delighted with the use of ‘On the Run’ twice during this set. Beats Antique Late Night at All Good 2013

Beats Antique provided the late night entertainment on Thursday night. Before the festival, Sidecar Tommy Cappel, drummer for Beats Antique talked with myself on the phone about his perspective going into the show.

It is the accumulation of the fans night. Places like All Good, the people are there for the music. I feel like we are really honored to be in that time slot. – Tommy Cappel

The band performed an exclusive Bob Marley remix for the All Good fans late Thursday/early Friday morning. Hess mentioned the show carried a large amount of new music compared to the show he saw in April in Nashville. When I talked with Cappel on the phone he mentioned having plenty of new material to work with for the All Good show and coming up into the fall tour. It is a great time to be a Beats Antique fan.

The music wrapped up, and guests crashed out at campsites spread around Buckeye Lake. Thursday was clear for most of the day, but Friday carried a little more rain than expected.
