WDBX 91.1 fm community radio based in Southern Illinois hosted their third annual Summer Street Fest in downtown Carbondale, Illinois. The event this year was hosted on Saturday, July 18.

The heat index hovered around 110 degrees, but that did not stop swarms of families, music fans, and local residents for a day of live music and entertainment.

This marked my third year helping out with the event. The WDBX station managers work year round to get the lineup ready, permission from the city, they work together to get the power and resources lined up, as well as the and many other elements that go into making the annual event.

Vendors lined up on Washington Ave. to provide food, drinks and ice cream to attendees. Summer traditions in the United States for me going up always included a refreshing drink on a hot day. Gypsy Nation worked with WDBX to host the dunk tank once again this year.

The music at the event showcases young and upcoming talent from St. Louis, Chicago, to Minnesota, and local acts to play outside of the radio station.

It is a launchpad for live acts. Little Pizza performed at the event last year, and have grown to be a local favorite in the Carbondale music scene.

Fiddle Rick performed a well-rounded acoustic set during the day. Yowie brought an experimental form of rock to the event. V2T2 Cabaret hosted the largest crowd. They provided a dance show, and entertainment to the festival.

Cheer-Accident, Chicago-based alternative rock, ended the event with a tasty blend of art-rock.

It mixed well with the crowd on hand. The WDBX crowd gathered around and celebrated summer with friends and family.

WDBX radio is community-based, and is an excellent reflection of the positive nature in Carbondale, Illinois. As Paris, WDBX DJ, noted, the station continues to reach out to build a tighter bond with the community. The station continues to look for new members and listeners to help support community radio in Southern Illinois.
