One of the emerging sections of Google is their Project Tango mobile evolution. The team has been crowdsourcing information and data with computer scientists around the globe.

Recently, the team has released a set of updates behind the project within YouTube videos. Find out more on Project Tango by Google.

Project Tango combines 3D motion tracking with depth sensing to give your mobile device the ability to know where it is and how it moves through space.

  • Motion tracking allows a device to understand position and orientation using Project Tango’s custom sensors. This gives you real-time information about the 3D motion of a device.
  • Depth sensors can tell you the shape of the world around you. Understanding depth lets your virtual world interact with the real world in new ways.
  • Project Tango devices can use visual cues to help recognize the world around them. They can self-correct errors in motion tracking and relocalize in areas they’ve seen before.

Project Tango is a computer vision platform for mobile devices that can track their motion, recognize spaces, and scan their surroundings in 3D using a camera based system.

In this episode Nicolai Munk Petersen talks about the positioning capabilities with Area Learning in Project Tango and see how to get started with Project Tango Explorer to learn and localize indoors.

In this episode, Nicolai Munk Petersen talks about how motion tracking gives mobile devices the power to track their fine-grain movement and move with you.
