Guests, vendors, artists and musicians gathered once again on Saturday to celebrate the end of summer. The Spirit Lake area provided room for a wide range of creative talent to showcase their skills in costume design, wood working, lightening, painting, yoga, mediation, music, slacklining, juggling and hula hooping. The live group consisted of Drew Emmitt, Andy Thorn, (from Leftover Salmon,) and Jenny Keel on upright bass. The bluegrass and acoustic music was an excellent way to start off the day. One of the covers that caught my attention was a tune titled 'Piece of My Heart.' The historic song was written by Jerry Ragovoy & Bert Berns and was originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967. It was made famous when Big Brother and the Holding Company adopted the track with Janis Joplin on lead vocals in 1968. Antibalas The Meadow Stage was overloaded with international musicians as Antibalas performed early Saturday afternoon. The skies were clear, and the music lifted spirits at the Suwannee Music Park. In contrast with one another, Lettuce had one set, and String Cheese performed three sets. The second set for SCI was filled with shocking covers and throwback jams. String Cheese always plays 7 sets at Hulaween spanning over the 3 days. Cheese fans get 1 special Hulaween treat each year, being the 2nd SCI set on the Saturday of Hulaween. This year String Cheese Incident took us back to the 80’s with their Stringier Things set on Saturday. The boys had practiced and it showed, they absolutely nailed all of the covers with the help of the Antibalas horns and Rhonda Thomas and Tony White on vocals. The set was started off with the Stranger Things or in this case Stringier Things theme and had sprinkles of it through out the night. Each act takes a different approach to music. The Revivalists, a New Orleans-based band, is more aggressive and in your face. Bob Moses on the other hand, is from Vancouver, and conducts more of an electronica sound. The Revivalists Setlist: Bulletproof, Stand Up, Criminal, It was a Sin, Fade Away, Closer, Hand that Feeds, All in the Family, Fireflies, Wish I Knew You Bob Moses Setlist: Like it or Not , Far from the Tree, Talk, Before I Fall, All I Want, Grace, Tearing Me Up, Keeping me Alive, Touch & Go STS9 threw down a monster set on The Patch stage. Their live set filled with audience with blood pumping music. Alana Rocklin continues to impress on the bass, and Zach Velmer has not lost a step. The drumming of Velmer in STS9 creates intense and remarkable performances. Disclosure closed down music on the Meadow Stage with electronic pop music. It was a decent live set, but I do value Big Gigantic for being able to mix it up with The String Cheese Incident. Musical acts that lack the ability to join other musicians on stage have a one trick pony element to them. Overall, music on Saturday was filled with memorable moments from each of the live performances.
